Zea Mays is the botanical name for corn silk, which has and is currently being investigated for its many health benefits including FDA sanctioned trials for its anti-collagenolytic activity to improve gum health. The theory is that Zea mays acts like low dose tetracyclines antibiotics to prevent the breakdown of gum connective tissue by proteolytic enzymes called MMPs.
